Edge of the Universe

I wrote this late at night in a hotel when I couldn't sleep. I sat on the window seat and looked out into the hotel parking lot lit by the parking lights. Not much inspiration. But somehow this came of it. Please don't skip the repetitive parts if you read this. They need to be read - every time. They're important.

He asked her for the last time if she was sure

Told her this was her last chance to turn back.

She sent her baggage on through, hugged him goodbye,

And with tear-filled eyes, she picked up her backpack.

And she said:

I don't expect the world to understand,

But I know in whom I have believed.

Jesus gave up everything for me,

In doing so He went through the depths of death.

The least I can do is offer up my life,

And travel with Him to the edge of the Universe.

So without looking back she boarded that plane,

To take the Gospel to a closed country.

Knowing that she might never again come back,

She cried, "Jesus this is my love for Thee."

He walked away that day quite a different man.

The words she said refused to leave his head,

They followed his every step throughout the day,

And haunted his dreams at night in bed.

And they said:

I don't expect the world to understand,

But I know in whom I have believed.

Jesus gave up everything for me,

In doing so he went through the depths of death,

The least I can do is offer up my life,

And travel with Him to the edge of the Universe.

It was ten years later he got the email,

From an old family friend telling him,

His old girlfriend was killed on the mission field,

For preaching out against the people's sin.

He was asked if he could preach the funeral.

The whole drive there he did nothing but cry.

His time came, he stood up, gripped the pulpit,

He looed out at them with tears in his eyes.

And he said:

She didn't expect the world to understand.

But she knew in whom she believed.

Jesus gave up everything for her,

In doing so he went through the depths of death.

She knew the least she could do was offer up her life,

And travel with Him to the edge of the universe.

She left everything she knew behind

Because she knew the Lord of hosts would protect and guide.

She did what others - you and I - refuse to do,

She dared to live out her faith,

And it took her to the edge of the Universe.

A man stuck the gun into his face and laughed,

"What were you thinking, you crazy white man?

You and your god don't belong here at all.

It's all for nothng, you dumb American."

He saw her beautiful face flash through his mind,

Her last smile at him, cheeksstained with tears,

He knew he'd not live to see the morning light,

Yet he stood up tall and then without fear,

He said:

I really don't expect you to understand - at all.

But I know in whom I hae believed.

Jesus gave up everything for me.

In doing so he went through the depths of death.

The least I can do is offer up my life

And travel with Him to the edge of the Universe.

"You'll find out He won't go with you to your hell."

"I've already been through my hell," he said.

"Before I dared to live out my life for God.

And it's Holy Ground I now go to tread.

"And I know He'll welcome me with open arms,

Say, 'Well done my good and faithful servant,'

For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."

And then, on his last journey he was sent.
